Our Story
Saint James African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church stands as a beacon of faith, unity, and service in Douglasville, Georgia. Our history is a testament to God’s faithfulness and the unwavering commitment of our congregation to advancing His kingdom.
The journey of Saint James AME Church began in 1882 with the purchase of a small tract of land by the trustees—J.T. Billingslea, O.H. Farmer, A.B. Holmes, R.T. Holmes, and J.G. Shropshire—for $5 from Joseph S. James. Before the church was officially organized, early members worshipped in each other’s homes.
In 1889, Saint James AME Church was formally established under the leadership of Rev. Pierce, Pastor; Rev. Lawrence, Presiding Elder; and Rev. Henry McNeil Turner, Bishop. As the church grew, so did its need for space. In 1918, additional land was purchased by trustees J.G. Cooke, G.W. Hicks, Julius Westbrooks, Jessie Bankston, T.R. Taylor, S.H. Smith, and Edward Cook. This property remains the church’s current location.
Over the decades, Saint James AME Church has been led by a lineage of dedicated pastors, presiding elders, and bishops who guided the church through times of rebuilding, renovation, and spiritual growth. Notable milestones include the 1949 rebuilding under Rev. A.B. Wilson, the construction of a new sanctuary in 1971 under Rev. D.A. Smith, and the burning of the mortgage in 1990 under Rev. Solomon Giles.
In 1998, Saint James transitioned from a Circuit Church to a Station Church, marking a new era of autonomy and consistent worship. Through each season of its journey, the church family has remained steadfast, embracing its rich heritage and the call to serve both the congregation and the broader community.
From 2011 to 2023, Rev. Dr. Keenan D. Hale, Sr. faithfully served as pastor of Saint James AME Church. Under his leadership, the church continued to grow spiritually and expanded its outreach efforts in the community. His dedication and vision strengthened the church’s foundation, preparing it for future growth and ministry opportunities.
In 2024, Saint James welcomed Rev. John D. Young as its pastor, ushering in a new chapter of leadership and service. Rev. Young, alongside the congregation, is committed to honoring the church’s legacy while boldly embracing the future with innovative ministry and a steadfast faith in God’s promises.
Saint James AME Church continues to stand on the foundation laid by its forebears, striving to fulfill God’s mission in Douglasville and beyond. We invite all to join us in worship, service, and community-building as we move forward in faith, empowered by God’s love and guided by His purpose.
